Kwikset error codes, explained
SmartCode deadbolts and levers, Halo. Codes below: Beep/flash patterns and the door-handing process. Each guide covers what the code means, what you can safely try yourself, when to stop and call a technician, and what the repair typically costs.
Kwikset SmartCode beeps, flashes red, won't lock
Kwikset's own documentation lists the causes in order. Number one: the door-handing process was never run (or needs re-running) — the lock literally doesn't know which way your door swings, and a SOLID red status LED means exactly that. Number two: battery too low to drive the bolt — three beeps + three red flashes is the documented signature (the keypad lights fine; the motor needs more juice than the LEDs). Number three: strike misalignment — Kwikset's own field test: if you must push, pull, or lift the door to lock it, reposition the strike.
Kwikset acting possessed after a battery change? Re-run door handing
Kwikset's SmartCode locks learn your door's swing direction through the 'door handing process' — and their own battery instructions bundle it: press and HOLD the Lock button while installing the battery pack, keep holding until the bolt starts moving on its own (it runs a full extend/retract cycle). Skip it and you get the classic symptoms: bolt moving the wrong way, beeping refusals, solid red LED. If the bolt doesn't self-cycle, Kwikset says pull the pack, wait 15 seconds, retry.
