ecobee stuck on 'calibrating' / wrong temperature
Applies to: ecobee3, ecobee4, SmartThermostat
What this error means
After any reboot, an ecobee shows 'calibrating: heating and cooling disabled' for up to ~20 minutes while its temperature sensor settles — normal once, a symptom if it recurs. Frequent recalibration means the thermostat keeps losing power (see the no-power causes) or a sensor fault.
Symptoms
- 'Calibrating' message after reboots
- Displayed temperature clearly wrong
- Message recurring through the day
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Wait 20–30 minutes after any power interruption — one calibration cycle is normal
- If it recurs, the unit is losing power: check float switch, wiring seating, and Power Extender Kit connections
- If temperature stays wrong after calibration, correct it via Settings → Installation Settings → Thresholds → Temperature Correction
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Recurring reboots with clean power = failing unit; ecobee support/warranty swap.
