DIY fix — no technician neededVerified by FixOffice
Wobbly or loose armrests
What's actually wrong
Armrest bolts loosen with daily load cycling; on height-adjustable arms, the internal spring-loaded pin and notched bar also wear over time.
Symptoms
- Arms move under light pressure
- Clicking from the arm posts
The fix, step by step
- Remove the seat cushion access covers if present and tighten every armrest bolt (usually 4mm/5mm hex)
- Add a drop of medium (blue) threadlocker to bolts that repeatedly loosen
- If a height-adjust arm slips through its positions, the internal spring-loaded pin/notch assembly is worn — it gets replaced as a unit, not repaired; worn arm PADS alone are a cheap $10–30 swap
When to skip DIY
Replacement arms for premium chairs (Aeron, Leap, Gesture) are model-specific and can run $140–330 OEM — order the exact part or use warranty.
