DIY fix — no technician neededVerified by FixOffice
Tank toilet flushing weakly
Applies to: Tank toilets, especially in hard-water areas
What this error means
Documented causes: tank water level set too low (adjust to ~1 inch below the overflow tube top), mineral scale clogging the rim jets under the bowl's edge (the invisible cause nobody checks — clear with a wire or vinegar soak), a partially closed supply valve, or a flapper dropping too early.
Symptoms
- Lazy swirl instead of a flush
- Double-flushing as routine
- Hard-water building (rim jets, guaranteed)
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Check tank level; raise the fill-valve float if low
- Rim jets: mirror under the rim, clear each jet with a bent wire; stubborn scale = vinegar-soaked paper towels tucked under the rim for a few hours
- Open the supply valve fully (it's been half-closed since someone's 'repair')
- Watch the flapper through a flush — it should stay up until the tank mostly empties
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Persistent weak flushing with all the above clean = drain-side partial clog — plumber with an auger.
