Projector overheating and shutting down

Applies to: Epson business projectors (method similar across brands)

What this error means

Ninety percent of projector overheating is the air filter nobody has ever cleaned. Epson's official method: remove the filter, tap it 4–5 times to shake out dust, vacuum the front side — never rinse it with water and never use canned air (both officially prohibited). Clearance matters too: Epson specifies at least 8 inches from walls, and ceiling-mounted units in warm rooms live harder lives. Above ~4,900 feet elevation, High Altitude Mode must be on — normal fan speed can't cope with thin air (Phoenix offices: you're fine; Denver satellite office: check it).

Symptoms

  • Shutdowns mid-presentation
  • Temp light warnings
  • Fan roaring louder than it used to

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

  1. Power off, let cool; remove the air filter (side or bottom panel)
  2. Tap out dust 4–5 times, vacuum the front side — no water, no canned air, per Epson
  3. Replace the filter if dust won't come out or it's damaged (cheap part)
  4. Check clearance: 8+ inches from walls, vents unblocked
  5. Above ~4,900 ft: Menu → Extended → High Altitude Mode ON

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

Overheating that persists with a clean filter and clear vents = internal fan or sensor service.
