Fluorescent & LED Lighting error codes, explained

Flickering or dead fluorescent light — tube or ballast?

The documented diagnostic order: tube first. Look at the tube ends — heavy blackening means the tube is at end of life (light gray banding is normal aging). The definitive test is swapping in a known-good tube. If good tubes still won't light, the ballast is the suspect — supporting evidence is a worsening buzz, slow starting, or visible tar leakage from the fixture.

Replacing fluorescents with LED tubes — Type A, B, and C, explained

The industry's UL taxonomy, worth knowing before any quote: Type A tubes are plug-and-play — they run on the existing ballast, lowest labor, but the ballast remains a future failure point and compatibility must be checked per tube. Type B is ballast bypass — the ballast is removed and the sockets wired to line voltage; it eliminates ballast failures forever but requires qualified rewiring and a mandatory 'modified fixture' relabel to preserve the UL listing (fixture can never take fluorescent tubes again). Type C uses an external LED driver — best efficiency and dimming, highest cost. For most offices: Type B across a floor kills the ballast-replacement treadmill permanently.

Buzzing or humming light fixtures

Magnetic ballasts hum by nature — vibrating metal laminations and a strong electromagnetic field; electronic ballasts are near-silent. So a steady mild hum from an older fixture is normal. The signal worth acting on is change: a new, loud, or worsening buzz, especially with slow starts or flickering, marks an aging ballast approaching failure.
