Buzzing or humming light fixtures

What this error means

Magnetic ballasts hum by nature — vibrating metal laminations and a strong electromagnetic field; electronic ballasts are near-silent. So a steady mild hum from an older fixture is normal. The signal worth acting on is change: a new, loud, or worsening buzz, especially with slow starts or flickering, marks an aging ballast approaching failure.

Symptoms

• Steady hum from older fixtures (normal for magnetic ballasts)
• New or worsening buzz (aging ballast)
• Buzz plus flicker or slow start (failing)

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

1. Identify the age: magnetic-ballast fixtures (older, heavier hum) vs electronic (quiet)
2. A worsening buzz + other symptoms = plan ballast replacement or, better, the LED retrofit (see that guide)
3. Check for loose fixture parts first — a rattling diffuser lens mimics a bad ballast for free

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

Swapping to an electronic ballast or Type B LED conversion eliminates the hum class entirely — electrician work, ~$150/fixture or retrofit economics.
