Brother 'Unable to Print 48' — Print head fault (inkjet)

Applies to: MFC / DCP inkjet series

What this error means

The print head failed a check — connection fault or head failure, sometimes triggered by a paper jam that jarred the carriage.

Symptoms

  • Error 48/50 class code
  • Carriage stuck or grinding

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

  1. Power off, open the cover, gently check the carriage moves freely and no jam fragments remain
  2. Power on and allow the init cycle to complete

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

If it persists — head replacement is usually uneconomical on consumer units; on business inkjets get a repair quote.
