Brother 'Unable to Print 48' — Print head fault (inkjet)
Applies to: MFC / DCP inkjet series
What this error means
The print head failed a check — connection fault or head failure, sometimes triggered by a paper jam that jarred the carriage.
Symptoms
- Error 48/50 class code
- Carriage stuck or grinding
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Power off, open the cover, gently check the carriage moves freely and no jam fragments remain
- Power on and allow the init cycle to complete
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
If it persists — head replacement is usually uneconomical on consumer units; on business inkjets get a repair quote.
