Brother error codes, explained
Laser printers, inkjet MFCs and DCP models. Codes below: Message-based errors (Drum Error, Unable to Clean 46…). Each guide covers what the code means, what you can safely try yourself, when to stop and call a technician, and what the repair typically costs.
Brother 'Fuser Error' / 'Self-Diagnostic' — Fuser fault
The fuser did not reach its target temperature in time (or ran too hot). The error won't clear on a quick restart — the machine needs about 15 minutes powered on for its self-check to re-run and release the error.
Brother 'Drum Error' / 'Drum !' — Drum unit needs attention
The corona wire on the drum unit is dirty, or the drum unit is at end of life. Distinct from 'Replace Drum' (a life counter) — 'Drum Error' is usually cleanable.
Brother 'Unable to Clean 46' — Ink absorber full (inkjet)
The waste-ink absorber pad counter has hit its limit. The machine refuses to run because the pad that catches cleaning-cycle ink is deemed full.
Brother 'Unable to Print 48' — Print head fault (inkjet)
The print head failed a check — connection fault or head failure, sometimes triggered by a paper jam that jarred the carriage.
Brother 'Toner Life End' / 'Replace Toner' — Toner counter reached
The toner cartridge hit its page counter. Brother counts pages rather than measuring remaining toner directly on many models, so cartridges are sometimes declared empty with toner remaining.
