HP 49 Service Error — Firmware communication crash
Applies to: LaserJet / LaserJet Enterprise series
What this error means
The printer's firmware hit a critical error, almost always triggered by a specific print job (corrupt PDF, bad driver data) or a network communication problem — not usually broken hardware.
Symptoms
- 49.XX.XX on the display, printer frozen
- Often happens on the same document every time
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Turn the printer off, unplug the network/USB cable, wait 30 seconds, power on
- Once it boots cleanly, clear the print queue on the computer/server that sent the job
- Reconnect the cable; if a specific document triggers it, re-save it (e.g., print-to-PDF) or update the print driver
- Update printer firmware if the error is frequent
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Only if it persists with no job pattern and after a firmware update — then it can be a formatter board fault.
