Schlage error codes, explained
Keypad and smart locks — BE365/FE595 family, Connect, Encode. Codes below: Indicator meanings and security guides. Each guide covers what the code means, what you can safely try yourself, when to stop and call a technician, and what the repair typically costs.
Schlage Encode — red X, won't lock or unlock
Schlage's official icon language on Encode touchscreens: checkmark = code accepted, X = wrong user code, flashing battery icon = low battery, SOLID battery icon = critical (the lock stops working without fresh batteries). The important one: a red X during an actuation attempt means the motor lost power mid-operation — Schlage's documented fix order is fresh name-brand alkaline batteries first, then checking that the motor wire (behind the interior thumb-turn plate) is seated. The app also warns at 20% and 8% battery.
Schlage keypad lock flashing red (BE365/FE595 family)
On Schlage's non-touchscreen keypad locks (BE365, FE595, FE575 and kin) there's no X or checkmark — just the lit Schlage button, and its patterns are official: three red flashes before green after a valid code = LOW battery; continuous red blinking with no input = CRITICAL battery, actuation about to fail. A red blink after a code entry simply means invalid code. Touch models add a documented tell: a delay before unlocking is itself a low-battery symptom.
The sticker on the back of your Schlage keypad is a security hole
Documented and underappreciated: Schlage keypad locks ship with their default programming and user codes printed on a sticker on the back of the exterior keypad assembly — readable by anyone who removes two screws. And a factory reset restores those printed defaults. Translation for offices: if your suite's keypad still uses the codes it shipped with, or the lock was ever factory-reset without reprogramming, the 'secure' door is running on codes physically printed on the device.
