Schlage Encode — red X, won't lock or unlock
Applies to: Schlage Encode / Encode Plus (BE489, FE789); icon logic similar on Connect
What this error means
Schlage's official icon language on Encode touchscreens: checkmark = code accepted, X = wrong user code, flashing battery icon = low battery, SOLID battery icon = critical (the lock stops working without fresh batteries). The important one: a red X during an actuation attempt means the motor lost power mid-operation — Schlage's documented fix order is fresh name-brand alkaline batteries first, then checking that the motor wire (behind the interior thumb-turn plate) is seated. The app also warns at 20% and 8% battery.
Symptoms
- X flashes when the bolt should move
- Lock works from the app but not the keypad, or vice versa
- Sluggish bolt travel before failures started
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Replace all batteries with fresh brand-name alkalines (not rechargeables, not mixed old/new) — this resolves the majority of cases
- If the X persists: remove the interior thumb-turn plate and reseat the motor connector per Schlage's guide
- Test with the door OPEN: works open but not closed = strike alignment, not the lock (see our alignment guide)
- On Connect models: a green check followed by red X = Vacation Mode is on, disabling all user codes — a classic office mystery
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
A lock that only works via app or blinks red without input may need warranty replacement — Schlage electronics carry a 3-year warranty.
