Schlage keypad lock flashing red (BE365/FE595 family)
Applies to: Schlage BE365, FE595, FE575, BE375, FE599 keypad locks
What this error means
On Schlage's non-touchscreen keypad locks (BE365, FE595, FE575 and kin) there's no X or checkmark — just the lit Schlage button, and its patterns are official: three red flashes before green after a valid code = LOW battery; continuous red blinking with no input = CRITICAL battery, actuation about to fail. A red blink after a code entry simply means invalid code. Touch models add a documented tell: a delay before unlocking is itself a low-battery symptom.
Symptoms
- Schlage button flashing red 3x before opening
- Continuous red blinking
- New delay between code entry and unlock
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Replace the battery (9V on BE365-class — behind the interior cover) at the first triple-flash; don't wait for critical
- If codes suddenly all fail after a battery change, re-enter carefully — then check whether someone reset the lock (see our default-code guide)
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Rarely needed — these are famously durable mechanical locks with simple electronics. If a fresh battery doesn't restore function, replacement (~$100–150 hardware) beats repair.
