Keurig descale light won't turn off

Applies to: Keurig K-Supreme / K-Slim / MultiStream models (classic models: run descale without the button combo)

What this error means

The descale alert is sensor-triggered by scale restricting water flow — and here's the trap that generates most 'broken Keurig' complaints: on newer MultiStream models (K-Supreme, K-Slim family), you must ENTER descale mode by holding the 8oz and 12oz buttons together for 3 seconds, then run the cycles. Descaling manually without entering the mode leaves the light on forever, and the machine gets condemned for a crime it didn't commit.

Symptoms

  • Descale light stays on after descaling
  • Slow brewing, partial cups
  • Machine louder than usual

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

  1. Empty the reservoir; add a bottle of descaling solution plus equal water
  2. MultiStream models: hold 8oz + 12oz together 3 seconds until the brew button flashes — that's descale mode — then run cycles as prompted
  3. Rinse: refill with fresh water to MAX and run rinse brews until the notification clears (it clears itself when done properly)
  4. Keurig's schedule: descale every 3 months, sooner in hard-water areas

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

Almost never — if descaling in the proper mode doesn't restore flow, the machine has terminal scale; office-grade replacements beat repair on consumer units.
