DIY fix — no technician neededVerified by FixOffice
Keurig 'Prime' error
Applies to: Keurig classic and K-series models
What this error means
'Prime' means water isn't flowing from the reservoir into the pump. Documented causes: a misseated reservoir (most common — it just needs a firm reseat), a clogged screen/valve at the reservoir base, or scale and debris further in.
Symptoms
- 'Prime' on the display
- Brew attempts abort
- Often after refilling or moving the machine
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Remove the reservoir and reseat it firmly — listen for it settling onto the valve
- Wash the reservoir; clear the exit screen at its base under running water
- Clean the needles (paperclip method) and run water-only brews
- Persistent? Descale
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
No — a Prime that survives all the above on a consumer unit means replacement.
