DIY fix — no technician neededVerified by FixOffice
Brother jam messages are a map — Tray, Inside, Rear, 2-sided
Applies to: Brother laser HL/MFC/DCP
What this error means
Brother's jam messages are location indexes, not fault codes: 'Jam Tray' = the paper tray, 'Jam Inside' = front, around the drum/toner, 'Jam Rear' = the back door and fuser area, 'Jam 2-sided' = the duplex path. Open the door the message names. Phantom jams that persist after clearing mean a torn scrap is still sitting on a sensor.
Symptoms
- Jam message naming a location
- Message persists after clearing (hunt the scrap)
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Open the door the message names; remove paper in the feed direction
- Check for torn corners with a flashlight — especially rear/fuser (CAUTION: hot)
- Open and close the front cover to reset after clearing
- Persistent phantom jams: the scrap hunt continues — duplex tray out, rear door open
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Frequent same-location jams = worn rollers in that path.
