Brother 'Replace Drum' still showing after a new drum? Reset the counter

Applies to: Brother laser HL/MFC/DCP

What this error means

'Drum End Soon' = order one, keep printing. 'Replace Drum' = the counter hit rated life. And if the message SURVIVES a new drum, nothing is wrong — the drum counter simply wasn't reset. On common mono lasers: power on, open the front cover, hold OK about 2 seconds, press the up arrow (or 1), close the cover. Sequences vary by model; only reset when actually installing a new drum.

Symptoms

  • Message persists after drum replacement
  • Confusion between drum and toner (separate parts!)

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

  1. Install the new drum unit (transfer your existing toner cartridge into it)
  2. Run the model's counter reset (common mono lasers: front cover open → hold OK 2s → ▲ → close)
  3. Never reset without replacing — the counter exists because print quality degrades on schedule

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
