HP 10.x — Supply memory error
Applies to: LaserJet series
What this error means
The printer can't read the memory chip on a toner cartridge — a poorly seated cartridge, a dirty chip contact, or (frequently) a compatible/refilled cartridge with a bad chip.
Symptoms
- Error right after replacing toner
- Supplies status shows a cartridge as missing/unknown
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Remove the cartridge, check the chip contact for tape or debris, reinstall firmly
- Try a different cartridge — if a compatible brand fails, an OEM cartridge is the decisive test
- Power cycle
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Rarely needed — if OEM cartridges also fail, the contact assembly in the printer needs service.
