DIY fix — no technician neededVerified by FixOffice
HP 13.xx — Paper jam family
Applies to: LaserJet series
What this error means
A sheet stopped somewhere it shouldn't, or a sensor thinks one did. The subcode indicates where (pickup, fuser area, duplexer, output). Phantom jams after clearing usually mean a torn fragment or a stuck sensor flag.
Symptoms
- Jam message that persists after removing visible paper
- Repeated jams from one tray
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Open every door and tray and remove paper in the direction of travel (pull with the path, not against it)
- Check the fuser area and duplexer for small torn corners — use a flashlight
- Fan and reload the paper stack; verify tray guides touch the stack without bowing it
- If jams repeat from one tray, try fresh, dry paper — humidity is the most common office jam cause
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Frequent jams in the same location despite fresh paper = worn rollers (cheap, quick fix for a tech, or a DIY roller kit on many models).
