HP 81/82/8X.YYYY — Network card (JetDirect) error

What this error means

A critical fault in the EIO network card (81 = slot 1, 82 = slot 2) or the embedded JetDirect. Power cycle, reseat/move the card, update firmware; if it's the embedded variant, the fault is on the formatter itself.

Symptoms

• Network printing dead
• Error naming EIO/JetDirect

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

1. Power cycle; unplug the LAN cable to see if the machine boots clean (isolates network-triggered faults)
2. Reseat the EIO card (or try the other slot)
3. Update JetDirect/printer firmware

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
