Xerox 016-781 — Scan-to-email/SMTP connection failure

What this error means
The machine couldn't connect to the configured mail server. Nearly always a network/settings issue: changed SMTP credentials, a mail provider now requiring app passwords/OAuth, or DNS problems.
Symptoms
- Scan-to-email stopped working (often after an IT change or password rotation)
- Copies and prints work fine
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Verify SMTP server, port, and credentials in the device's web admin page
- If using Microsoft 365/Gmail, confirm the account still allows SMTP relay (modern auth changes silently break these)
- Test DNS: try the SMTP server by IP address to isolate DNS vs auth
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
