Epson 0x97 — Internal hardware fatal error (WorkForce)

What this error means

A fatal internal hardware fault, notorious on several WorkForce models — commonly attributed to motherboard failure, sometimes preceded by nothing at all.

Symptoms

• Printer stops mid-job with 0x97
• All functions dead until reset

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

1. Power off, unplug for 5+ minutes, hold the power button 15 seconds while unplugged (drains residual charge), replug and power on
2. Remove and reseat ink cartridges
3. If it clears, print a test page; the error often recurs — plan accordingly

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

Board replacement usually exceeds the printer's value; if the reset doesn't stick, budget for replacement rather than repair on consumer WorkForce units.
