Epson 0xF1 — Carriage/feed mechanical error (ignore the 'registry' myth)

Applies to: Epson WorkForce family

What this error means

A fatal mechanical error: the carriage or paper-feed mechanism can't move or find home — deep paper fragments, encoder strip trouble, or motor failure. Public service announcement: the SEO content farms claiming 0xF1 is 'Windows registry corruption' are wrong; it's hardware, per every technical source.

Symptoms

  • 0xF1 on WF-3640/7620 class machines
  • Grinding at startup

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

  1. Power off; hunt paper fragments through every access (front, rear, duplex)
  2. Confirm the carriage slides freely; clean the encoder strip with a dry cloth
  3. Unplug 60+ seconds; retry

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

Motor/board-level faults — weigh service against replacement on consumer units.
