Epson E-01 — Fatal error at startup

What this error means

A general fatal error during initialization — commonly a carriage obstruction (packing material, jammed fragment) or hardware fault.

Symptoms

• E-01 at power-on
• Carriage doesn't complete its init sweep

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

1. Power off, open the cover, remove any packing tape/material and jam fragments, confirm the carriage slides freely by hand
2. Power on and let initialization complete without opening the cover

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

If the path is clear and it persists — hardware fault, usually uneconomical to repair on consumer units.
