Epson 'Ink pad is at the end of its service life'

Applies to: WorkForce / EcoTank / consumer inkjet series

What this error means

The waste-ink pad counter reached its limit. Like Brother's error 46, this is a counter-driven lockout protecting against internal ink overflow — the machine may be physically fine.

Symptoms

  • Message blocks all printing
  • Often appears on an otherwise working printer

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

  1. Epson offers a one-time reset utility for some models, and 'maintenance box' equipped models (many EcoTank/WorkForce Pro) have a user-replaceable waste box — check whether yours does; that's a $15–30 fix
  2. For pad-based consumer models, third-party reset tools exist but running on saturated pads risks ink leakage

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

Service centers can replace pads and reset counters; weigh cost vs replacement on cheap units.
