Ricoh SC542 — Fusing temperature warm-up failure

What this error means

The fusing lamp didn't bring the unit to target temperature in time. The single most common Ricoh service code; causes range from a worn fusing lamp/unit to a power-supply issue. It latches until reset.

Symptoms

• Machine stops during warm-up with SC542
• Often appears after a power outage or moving the machine

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

1. Power off fully, wait 2 minutes, power on (this clears a transient trip on some models)
2. Plug directly into a wall outlet
3. If it returns, stop resetting — the fusing unit likely needs service

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

If one careful power cycle doesn't clear it. Techs will test the lamp, thermistors, and power supply and clear the latched code.
