Ricoh error codes, explained

Aficio, MP and IM series copiers (also applies to many Savin/Lanier/Gestetner models). Codes below: SC codes (SC101–SC899). Each guide covers what the code means, what you can safely try yourself, when to stop and call a technician, and what the repair typically costs.

Ricoh SC541 — Fusing thermistor abnormal

The fusing unit's temperature sensor read open/abnormal. The machine locks out; on most Ricoh models SC5xx fusing errors latch and need a reset sequence after the fault is addressed.

Technician usually required

Ricoh SC542 — Fusing temperature warm-up failure

The fusing lamp didn't bring the unit to target temperature in time. The single most common Ricoh service code; causes range from a worn fusing lamp/unit to a power-supply issue. It latches until reset.

Technician usually required

Ricoh SC543–SC546 — Fusing temperature abnormal (family)

Sibling codes to SC542: SC543 is a fusing overheat detected in software, SC544 the same condition detected at the hardware level, SC545 the fusing lamp staying at full power without the expected temperature rise, and SC546 fusing ready-temperature instability. Same underlying system, same repair path, and the same latching behavior.

Technician usually required

Ricoh SC320 — Polygon motor error

The laser unit's polygon mirror motor failed to reach or hold speed — the machine can't write images.

Technician usually required

Ricoh SC101 — Exposure lamp error

The scanner's exposure lamp didn't light or produced too little light during the white-plate check.

Ricoh SC390 — Toner density (TD) sensor error

The development unit's toner density sensor is reading out of range — commonly after toner runs fully empty, a non-OEM toner issue, or developer end-of-life.

Ricoh SC672 — Controller start-up error

Communication between the operation panel and the main controller wasn't established at startup (or dropped afterward) — often a transient software hang, occasionally a controller board, harness, or storage fault preventing the controller from booting.

DIY fix — no technician needed

Ricoh SC899 — Software/firmware error

A firmware-level exception, frequently triggered by a specific print job or a network application rather than hardware.
