DIY fix — no technician neededVerified by FixOffice
Ricoh SC819, SC990, SC991 — The software error family
Applies to: Aficio / MP / IM series (and Savin, Lanier equivalents)
What this error means
Three flavors of 'the software tripped over itself': SC819 is a fatal kernel error (RAM overflow — power cycle usually clears it; recurring = firmware reload), SC990 a software performance error, and SC991 the mild sibling where operation can continue. All three share the same playbook: power cycle, then firmware update if recurring. (SC899, covered separately, is the job-triggered cousin.)
Symptoms
- Random crash with one of these codes
- Often after a specific job or app
- Machine otherwise healthy
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Power off at the main switch, 2 minutes, on
- Clear the print queues feeding the machine
- Recurring: request the latest firmware from your dealer — these are patched bugs
- Record the bracketed detail code for the ticket
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
Only if firmware-current and still recurring — controller diagnosis.
