Canon E202 — Scanner home position error
Applies to: imageRUNNER / imageRUNNER ADVANCE series
What this error means
The scanner carriage could not find its home position — the optical unit is stuck, the position sensor failed, or the drive belt slipped.
Symptoms
- Copying/scanning fails but printing from a computer may still work
- Grinding from under the platen glass
- Carriage visibly stuck mid-track
Try this first (safe DIY steps)
- Power off, check for shipping lock (a slider under or beside the platen glass on many models) and set it to unlocked
- Look under the glass for obstructions (paper clips, staples)
- Power cycle
Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.
When to call a technician
If the carriage still won't home — belt or sensor replacement.
