Canon E540 — Finisher tray lift error

What this error means

The finisher's output tray couldn't find its home position — and the classic cause is delightfully mundane: something is under or around the tray (a forgotten paper stack, a stapler, someone's lunch), or the tray is overloaded.

Symptoms

• Error during big print runs
• Finisher tray visibly stuck or overloaded

Try this first (safe DIY steps)

1. Remove ALL paper and objects on, under, and around the finisher output tray
2. Power cycle
3. Watch the tray run its startup travel — obstruction will be obvious

Safety: power off before any physical intervention. Never bypass covers or interlocks — fuser areas run hot enough to burn.

When to call a technician

If the tray still won't home with a clear path — lift motor/sensor service.
